Underground Utilities

Commercial development projects require extensive underground utility infrastructure — from water and sewer mains serving multiple buildings to electrical duct banks, gas distribution, telecommunications conduit, and fire suppression systems. Getting utility infrastructure installed correctly and on schedule is one of the most coordination-intensive aspects of commercial construction. Ground Co. handles the earthwork side of commercial utility work throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

We excavate utility corridors, install conduit and casing, prepare trenches to the bedding specifications required by each utility type, and backfill and compact to the standards required for pavement and structure loading above. Our role is to create utility trenches that are ready for the licensed contractors installing the actual utility — and to backfill those trenches in a way that provides long-term support.

Before any utility work begins, we obtain all required utility locates through OUPS and Kentucky 811, and we maintain a safe working distance from located utilities throughout the project. We also work with property surveys and building records when available to know what to expect underground.

Commercial water and sanitary sewer main depths in Greater Cincinnati depend on the local utility district's requirements. Cincinnati Water Works, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, and the various county sewer districts each have their own specifications for bedding, cover depth, and backfill compaction. We've worked with most of the major districts across Hamilton, Clermont, Warren, and Butler counties and understand what their inspectors look for during installation.

Trench backfill compaction under commercial pavement is critical and frequently under-documented. Pavement failure over utility trenches is common when backfill is poorly compacted — the trench settles, the pavement cracks and sinks, and you're patching it two years after the project is complete. We backfill in controlled lifts, coordinate with your testing agency for compaction testing, and provide documentation. This step takes more time than dumping fill and running a plate tamper once — but it's the difference between a trench that holds up and one that fails.

We regularly coordinate multi-utility trench packages on commercial developments — water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer trenching in sequence, coordinated with licensed contractors for pipe installation and with the civil engineer for grade verification on gravity utilities. Managing this coordination is part of how we add value beyond just operating equipment.
